Did you ever noticed how my countdowns on the sidebar were always off?? As soon as I made a countdown for picking up the RV, the dealer called and told me he needed me to pick it up now. As soon as I made one for NY, a campground reservation opened up in Jersey. CM & I joked that I need to make a countdown for us winning the lottery because everything has been happening sooner than we expect.

This endeavor has taught us to be flexible, really flexible.

That being said, no more countdowns. Now I am going to keep track of how much we spend and how far we travel. I’m still up in the air about whether or not to include the RV payment in our expenses.

What do you think?

I once did a little bit of research on a man named Edward Bernays. He is considered the father of modern public relations. While working on an ad campaign for Macy’s he created and popularized the idea that people should use clothing to define themselves. I think this idea is built in to our society now and people buy clothing to distinguish themselves.

I mention this because CM and I are both having problems reducing our and our children’s clothes and I’m wondering if this might be why. The fact of the matter is that we don’t have enough room for everything. It’s possible we are having a difficult time transitioning from clothing being a statement to clothing being items of utility. It doesn’t help that I keep worrying that I will be wearing the same outfit in all of my photos of this trip which I plan to look at for the rest of my life.

Okay, this is why I love this blog. Once I actually typed that last line out, I realized how stupid it is. It’s not like someone’s going to be looking at my pics saying, “Oh my God, are you wearing the same outfit on Route 66 that you wore in Hawaii??”

Okay, I better go sort through my clothes right now while I’m feeling determined.

I am just going to put this out there. I have seen so many scary movies that take place in small towns, that I’m a little scared to visit them. Maybe it’s just that positive movies about small towns just don’t become blockbusters. While films like “Jeepers Creepers”, “A Time to Kill”, “Strangers”, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, and a few others were big blockbusters and have made me think of small towns as places where serial killers live and the towns are full of racists citizens and law enforcement.

Hollywood has made me afraid to visit new places. I’m tired of it and something has got to change.

Now that I think about it, it’s not just small towns, I am generally afraid of the unknown. I think I have Yahoo News and Hollywood to thank for that. And yes, I realize this is not a good quality to have if one is about to embark on a life of traveling, but how will our multicultural family be received? Am I being ridiculous?

I expect for our family to learn some hard lessons on this trip. But I thought the lessons would be about learning to tell the difference between needs and wants, how to conserve, and how to respect others’ from different cultures.

I don’t know if I’m prepared to explain racism, abuse of authority, or other topics like that.

Help me out on this, am I totally out of line here? What do you think about small town America? For our readers who consider themselves to be from small town America, what do you think about big cities? Do you think Hollywood makes you afraid of places like NYC?

Question: How will you decide where to go first and what to see?

Answer: Thanks, Henry, for the great question. I didn’t have to think long and hard about this one. Actually once I realized my answer I was a little embarrassed. You know how I’m always complaining about the Disney factory? Well, one of their movies “Cars” planted the seed about driving along Route 66.

Sally, one of the characters said something like, “People used to drive these roads to have a good time, not to make good time.” Honestly, that stuck with me. I want to take a slow ride across the country. I want the whole family to see the sights. Furthermore, I want us to stop at little restaurants that aren’t part of national chains.

Recently, I’ve been thinking that if we see a field of flowers like the ones I’ve seen in the movies, we’re going to pullover and lay in it. I’ve never done that before.

When we reach California, we’re going to fly to Hawaii to see a volcano. It seems like a great symbol of our journey. These feelings of dissatisfaction with the status quo have finally bubbled up to the service and now we are creating a new life. Just like the lava bubbles up creates new islands in the Pacific.

First things first, I’m over my little temper tantrum. Thanks, Chris (one of our readers), for the reality check. Tonight TBS (the cable channel) threw a pick-me-up my way in the form of the movie “RV”. Perfect! If you haven’t seen this movie before you have to rent it, or catch an “encore presentation” on TBS on Sunday night. We had this movie in our Netflix queue for almost a year. We kept pushing it back and then one day we forgot to push it down and we got it. CM & I reluctantly watched it with the kids, but we ended up laughing the entire time. Robin Williams is hilarious. I think this film planted the seeds for our transition to RVing. The day after seeing the movie for the first time I got on the phone with an RV rental place.

Have you ever tried to rent an RV?? The rates are outrageous! A lot of RVs start out at $100 a day and that doesn’t include the miles you put on it or the fuel. Renting the cheapest RV for a week would have cost over $700! There was no way we could afford that. As a matter of fact, our loan payment on our RV for the entire month is well under that amount. That’s why CM & I never tested out RVing before buying. We were always scared that if we rented one for a week and decided we liked it that we wouldn’t have enough money for a down payment because we spent it all on rental fees.

I thought it was interesting how everyone at the RV park was pretty young, albeit they could’ve been extras in “Deliverance”, but young nonetheless. I can’t wait to go to my first RV park and see what people are really like. As far as demographics, did art imitate life or did the filmmakers use younger actors to mirror their target audience. I read on an RV organization’s web site that they actually expected and received a bump in RV sales/rentals from the movie.

So go check out the movie and let me know what you think.

We have just about sold all of our electronics. I’ve sent hundreds of emails and we’ve burned through nearly all of our AT&T rollover minutes trying to give people directions to our house, so they can pick stuff up. During these last couple of weeks, I’ve seen electronics that cost us $2000+ sell for less than $600. I was so fed up with all of it! Then today “he” spoke to us. He whispered voodoo into our ears and we were instantly hypnotized. “He” doesn’t want us to show our kids the world. He wants to throw us off our path of conservation and adventure.

“He” is Steve Jobs. It’s true. He unveiled the new iPhone today in his keynote speech and I just drooled the entire time. I have to be cool and uninterested when CM is raving about the latest and greatest product from Apple, but as soon as he turns his back I’m trying to figure out how we can fit it into our budget! Yesterday my phone was fine, but today it’s grossly deficient and I need a new one. Or so I think. To make matters worse, the new iPhone costs half of what we paid for ours in December. This is a prime example for why we need to buckle down and buy used.

What scares me is how will I be able to convince my children that new isn’t always better if I don’t practice it myself? Living in an RV will definitely keep us from buying a lot of new stuff. It will hopefully make us, as one fellow Craigslister put it, “aware of what we bring into our space”. So much of product marketing is built around making you feel like you’re missing something and then selling you a product that will fill that void and thus make you whole. That pattern/cycle has been etched into my brain. My hope is that this time in the RV will help me create new patterns that don’t involve buying things to make me feel better.

Viking brand ranges are the top-selling high-end ovens in the country. I’ve drooled over them once or twice in my life. Did you know that 75% of them go unused?? I personally draw a parallel with my own possessions. I’ve got a ton of clothes and I’m so sad because I can’t fit them ALL into the RV, but I probably don’t wear 75% of them. It’s also possible that I don’t use 75% of the stuff in my apartment. Do you want to know what opened my eyes?

It was “The Invisible Badge – Moving Past Conspicuous Consumption”, a manifesto from ChangeThis.com. The author hits the nail on the head about buying things to impress others, or buying things as an expression of who we wish we were. I am completely guilty of this. I always feel that I have to let people know that I live in Brooklyn because I want to save money not because I’m broke. (Although technically, now I am broke.)

The reading made me realize that I do not need most of those clothes and I do not need most of my “stuff”. As I complete my transition from apartment living to RV living I will keep this article in mind. If you have 7 minutes, you should read the manifesto here.

Daily Wisdom: It doesn’t matter who else can “see” who you are. What matters is that you know. ~Rob Walker

If you have the time, let me know what you think about the piece.

We have nearly stretched ourselves to our financial breaking point in order to buy the RV and now that we’ve got it, we can’t move it! Then we see the article in the New York Times about oil shooting up 8% to $138 a barrel just because an investment bank said it would hit $150 a barrel by July 4!! Can you believe it?? Investment banks invest, so when they put out a report like that, they only drive up the prices in commodities that they’ve already invested in. Throw speculators in the mix and now we’re all paying higher prices at the pump. There was absolutely no change in the actual oil market itself. The Times quoted someone saying that this whole thing was a bubble, but the end is not in sight.

Initially, I was pretty pissed, but once I got passed the anger the news made me glad that I have an RV and this is why:

It’s an incentive for me not to be paralyzed by gas prices. If prices were higher because of some tax to curb global warming, I’d do everything I could to reduce my consumption. (CM and I shopped around for the most fuel-efficient RV that we could find. The one we ended up buying gets nearly just as good gas mileage as our Honda Odyssey. Which is pretty sad now that I think about it.)

But this is about a handful of people getting rich while we suffer. I feel that as a parent, my children need to travel in order to gain wisdom about the way the world works. They need to learn about different cultures and different ways of doing things. I want them to see that all people don’t obsess over money. I’m going to make that happen even if gas gets up to $10 a gallon because I feel that kind of knowledge is priceless.

How do you react to higher gas prices? Do you stay home or is it business as usual?

CM decided that we should eat dinner in the RV. He made cheeseburgers and fries and we brought it all into the dining area. The dinette was pretty roomy considering that I sat next to CM and the kids sat with each other. I’d have to say that the biggest problem was keeping the children from touching the seat cushions with greasy hands. At this point I’d say we’re obsessed with resale value and we don’t want them messing up anything.

After we finished eating we sat and watched a little television, well at least CM and I watched television. The kids ran back and forth in the RV all night long. It got a little loud at times, but we tried our best to give them a little freedom. It seems like what they lost in space, they made up for with volume.

Overall, it was very different environment, one that will take some getting used to. No one has yet to use the toilet, so I’m still pretty worried about smells. Maybe we’ll try it out today.

There has been one huge change that neither CM or I expected: Midget was really affectionate. She is usually pretty moody and doesn’t like to give hugs and kisses. Once we were in the RV, she was giving hugs and kisses all night long.

Things are definitely starting to get interesting.
