When we got the RV last week, we were feeling pretty broke and not wanting to even think about moving it. This week is a different story. After a lot of back and forth and a little name calling, CM and I finally came up with a rough timeline for the next few months.
For those who have been following the “windshield saga”, you know that the RV is M.I.A. until Thursday. Between Thursday and Saturday we are going to pack it up with all of our clothes and other important items. On Saturday and Sunday we hope to sell some things and the rest we plan on giving away. The next week we plan on taking what ever is left in the house out to the curb for the garbage collectors.
CM and I had the bright idea to paint every wall in our apartment, so we have to give ourselves about a week and a half to repaint the walls. It’s really important to us that we get our deposit back so we have to repaint.
Our lease is up on June 30th, so everything must be out by then. That week we are driving down to Georgia to park our Honda Odyssey in my dad’s garage. We plan to spend July camping at various New York state parks and getting used to RV living.
THEN….(drumroll)….we’re taking Route 66 all the way to California!!! Then we’re going to fly from California to Hawaii. While we’re in Hawaii we are going to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where we will see an active volcano!
After all of that excitement we’ll probably take the highway back to New York and start planning our next expedition.
Have any of you ever been on Route 66? I haven’t, and I would love to know which places I should avoid, and which places are “must-see”. So if you have the time, please fill me in!

Much of old route 66 was turned into Interstate 40, but there are still several disconnected sections off the main highway. Get good maps and/or travel guides of the route, since much of it is now well off the main road. Well worth seeing, though. Some of the sections through New Mexico and Arizona are rather desolate, but quite beautiful in their isolation. Crossing the continental divide in New Mexico is a nice milestone. Northwest Texas is not worth slowing down for; Amarillo is an armpit. Unless you need to stop for gas, just keep going until you reach Tucumcari, NM. (which is also small and run-down, but is mostly off the new highway 40 main drag and has more of the old route 66 feel) All in all, sounds like an awesome trip!

Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t even know about the whole Interstate 40 thing. Obviously, we need to do some research before we head out.
You’ve got me especially excited about the New Mexico/Arizona leg of the trip. Isolation is exactly what I’m looking for! If you can think of anything else, let me know. I’m all ears.

Well, since you’re tech-oriented and not looking to pick up too many more books, I’d suggest by starting with wikipedia. The entry there has alot of good info about the history of the “mother road”. For more detail, check out historic66.com, which looks to be an awesome site. It has a thorough route description, maps, etc… lots of great info. There are also lots of travel guides and articles written in print about it; I don’t really know any titles offhand though.

I have been looking over those two sites for the last couple of days. They just get me sooo excited!
I think I need to look at historic66.com every morning before I start the daily push. That should give me the extra push I need to get rid of this crap so that I can hit the road.
Thanks for this great resource!
